Science vs Religion - Week 7

On my mission in California, we met someone who was jogging and we tried talking to her. I can't remember what we said to her to start the 12 second conversation but she replied and said that she believes in science and then continued jogging without us saying anything back. My question to my self was, "why do so many people think it is either science or God? Why not both?" There is not enough information to put the puzzle pieces together yet.

Time differences. We know that the bible uses the term days. If we were only to use limited knowledge of most all other faiths this would mean that God made the earth in just six days, and on the seventh He rested. Some may argue that one day for God is about a thousand years, but we have been told by apostles that these were actually time periods - when one event happened to the next. Science tells us that the Earth is 4.58 billion years old. Even with interpretation of the bible and modern revelation, there still is no sure answer. The problem with science is that is it always evolving and changing and so it may not be true. But with our current understanding it may be.

We are giving the general creation order in the Bible. However it doesn't say where those materials came from. What if this earth was made of lots of other parts. What if a whole Continental plate was used from another past earth? In Gen 1:1-2 it says, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." From this we can see that the earth had no shape yet. To me, I assume this is like mixing a ton of ingredients together to make a cake. Putting in flour, eggs, and what not. It is one big mess. But all the preexisting materials are still there. Who isn't to say that there was a planet of dinosaurs and that was then organized into the earth? We can see from Science that there are fossils that we can date, there is also radioactivity decay that helps us date things. In both situations we are missing the full picture.

I love the talk by Cleon Skousen called The Meaning Of the Atonement. Even though not all of what he taught may be true, there are some good thoughts that can make sense. He mentioned that there are things to be acted upon and things to act. When we get a spiritual intelligence and attach that to an atom we can now command that atom to follow laws. This is how one can move mountains, or change the weather by commanding the elements. Even though science says there was a big bang and says we were monkeys. I believe that there is a partial truth in that. It is easy for me to see that God commanded atoms to work in certain ways to accomplish His goals.

Looking at the past is like looking at the future. We are given enough information, but not the whole. We do not need that information or map in order to get to our desired location.

In ending, we do not have enough evidence on either side to draw a full conclusion on this topic. We just have enough information to get to where we should be going.
