Metamorphic Construction Materials - week 6

This week we were asked to find a metamorphic rock that was used in construction. This image shows a metamorphic rock - even though many would say this is marble.

The reason I wanted to use this picture is because we can see that there has been pressure  has been applied. We can see that the pressure was applied from left and right, hence we have the participles that have been aligned up and down. This to me looks like it has banding, this is where the is a band or white and then black. At the same time this could also be Gneiss, which is a foliated rock.It looks as though there is quartz and feldspar here, which are its parents rocks. This is not an igneous rock as we can see that there has been much pressure and heat applied here to combine the two parent rocks into this new one.

Local Area Connection

"Marble: Marble is metamorphosed limestone. The calcite crystals in marble are large and interlocking, forming a dense crystalline rock. Marble of the Deseret Limestone and Gardison Formation can be seen in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake County." geology.utah.gov.
